My Hero is a Vampire

I’m taking part in a little blogfest with my critique partners (Chapter by Chapter) today – we’re blogging about the heroes we love, who are often the stars of our stories, and thanking them for what they give us – either in real life or imagination. We cross the spectrum from our not thanked enough men in uniform and first responders, to the more fantastical members of paranormal worlds.

For me, I tend to veer out of the real world. I spend enough time in it as it is.

I was a real horror movie buff when I was a kid – until I actually started getting scared somewhere along the way. I remember staying up late on Saturday nights for Thriller Theater. I used to love the old black and white monster movies – Dracula, Frankenstein, Godzilla, and so on.

It wasn’t until much later, when I was pretty much bed-bound after a not so fun run with pneumonia, when I started seeing vampires as heroes. Specifically, it was Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Of course, Angel was seriously hot (and Boreanaz still is, IMO), but more than that, it was the flawed man, the pained soul, the dead heart trying to beat, that called to me. Not to mention some serious sexual tension between Buffy & Angel.

I fell in love with vampires then and have never stopped. I think it has something to do with the constant battle for humanity and morality they wage against their darker tendencies. Or seeing themselves as monsters and desperately trying not to be one, not to give in.

Its being loved by the most powerful man in the world, knowing he would die before he’d hurt you, that he could protect you against all odds, and that he would never leave you. And of course, there is that charm of never growing old, never falling ill. It could certainly be considered the fountain of youth.

Yeah, after a couple hundred years or so it would probably get old, but for now, as I creep unerringly across the average mortal lifespan, it’s an entertaining thought.

Who are your heroes? What makes them special to you?

Don’t forget to skip on over and take a peek at the scrum-i-licious heroes from my other CBC gals – and meet some exciting authors while you’re at it:

  1. I was the horror movie buff, too! Bram Stoker's Dracula is my absolute favorite of the bunch.

  3. I am, and always will be a superfan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cried the day she jumped off the building and supposedly died - only to be reborn on another network.

Oh, but we were talking about heroes!!! I loved Angel and never understood why they woulnd't give him a HEA. He deserved it!

  4. As long as we're talking supernatural heroes, I've always had a thing for Cole (Phoebe's crazy-demon ex on Charmed)...when he was bad, ooohhhhh...and when he was good, swoon. :)

  5. Vampires. The ultimate bad boy.

My first vampire crush was Frank Langella in Dracula.

But I have a serious hangup for Angel/Angelus.

And there was something so sultry about the way Gary Oldman dragged out the name "Mina" in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

  6. I'm going to cast my vote for Brad Pitt and Louis in Interview With a Vampire. BUT, I wouldn't kick Kellan Lutz out of bed either ;op

  7. I loved Frank Langella, too. Saw that classic on TV not to long ago - he was a mighty attractive man, eh. ;-)

Yes, Brad Pitt made a great vamp. I was diggin' Antonio Banderas as well in that one. Yummy.

And yeah, Angel totally deserved an HEA!
